The Myth of "Just One More Thing"
-- 12 December 2007

There you are in the bookstore, browsing the self-growth aisles. Or maybe you’re in REI or some other outdoor outfitting store, looking at headlamps or gear bags. Or you’re looking through a stack of cooking catalogues. And then it happens.

“Oooo.”, says an almost undetectable voice in your head. “If I just get this book, this headlamp, this amazing kitchen gadget, I’ll know exactly what to do, see exactly what I need to see and make the most amazing meals FOREVER!”. Out pops your wallet, a bag enters your hand (or a package arrives at your door) and it feels like heaven has arrived on earth and perfection (in all its many forms) is yours.

Until the next time you’re in the bookstore, the outdoor outfitters, or looking at catalogues.

Sound familiar? I know it’s true for me. My kitchen holds gadgets never used, my closet hides clothes I never wear (even when they fit!), and my bookcase is full of books barely glanced at, much less read. And all in search of “just one more thing” that will magically unlock perfection. It’s an activity so subtle it took me a long time to recognize its voice and power in my life.

All that searching is a distraction and a diversion. A distraction keeping you from connecting deeply with your basic goodness and the wisdom of your heart. A diversion of valuable energy away from creativity and connection.

This is not about never shopping again or living an ascetic bare bones life. One of the best parts of being human is living in a world of beauty, abundance and amazing creations. The trick is finding the balance between appreciating these gifts an d being trapped by them. It's about cultivating mindfulness and awareness about what you are doing and why you are doing it.

You can use the wisdom of small steps to practice curiousity and a willingness to connect quietly with the voice that so skillfully keeps you distracted. You can thank it for its mis-guided help, or you can tell it to go sit in the corner.

Then, practice building a relationship with your heart. Close your eyes, take a few breaths, and gently bring your attention to your heart. Acknowledge your heart's connection to your basic goodness. Just gently stay with your heart. You don't need to do anything else.

This is how you help yourself, the planet and the people who cross your path each day. By starting right where you are to realize that perfection is right here, right now, exactly where you are. You really don't need "just one more thing". You just need your heart.
