A Wish for Kindness
-- 19 December 2007

Wishes for peace abound this time of year. As the new year comes and the season fades, it's easy to lose that feeling and go back to things as they are.

For peace to take root, flourish and expand, it's got to be a continuum and a journey. Not a destination or bump in the road. The origins of peace reside in kindness. In the willingness and ability to be genuinely kind in our interactions with both ourselves and our others.

Without kindness, how can there be peace?

A few weeks back, we talked about "Start Your Day A Little Bit Better". The idea that before popping out of bed in the morning, you take a few moments to set your inte ntion for the day.

The idea is to gently create new habits as a way of creating change first in your life, which then extends to others through your actions. Cultivating the ground for kindness and peace to take root and grow.

As I've worked with this, some days the intention flows easily, and other days it feels a bit forced and stuck. Through steps and mis-steps, I arrived at some words that express a wish for kindness.

May I use the gift of this day wisely.

May I extend kindness to all who cross my path.

May I know when to be still and when to take action.

May I at the very least do no harm, and at the very most be of
benefit.

Above all, may I be kind.

Peace in your heart, means peace in our world. And it begins here, with you and me.
