People, places and books that have been part of the journey to
The First Move.
Naropa University
It’s amazing how many people cross my path who have had experience with this school. The draw is the integration of contemplation into the educational environment. You are expected to cultivate mindfulness and awareness as part of your learning. My experience has been with their online classes, and they are superb.
Shambhala Sun
A wonderful magazine about Buddhism, culture, meditation and life. Real life lessons and teachings that can be understood and integrated by anyone.
The Soul of Money
Lynne Twist’s book and philosophy was life changing for me. She introduced me to people and companies committed to solving big problems by adopting the idea of sufficiency rather than scarcity. People from all walks of life, working together, to make the world a better place for everyone. And yet, these stories are hidden from view for most of us. Bringing these kinds of stories – both large and small – to a larger audience is one of the goals of The First Move.
Life Design Strategies
Vicky White of Life Design Strategies has a unique approach to coaching. She combines the ancient wisdom of Feng Shui with the modern wisdom of coaching. Working with Vicky, I learned to clear both my inner and outer clutter. This created space for The First Move come in to being. And in the process, I learned to listen to and trust my inner guidance.
It's Up to You: The Practice of Self-Reflection on the Buddhist Path
This book is a real gift. Its author, Dzigar Kongtrul, is a highly trained Tibetan lama with a gift for teaching western students. (I learned of him listening to Pema Chodron tapes. He is one of her teachers.) What I really like about this book is the focus on one lesson: self-reflection. We're challenged to examine “who we really are” as a way to lighten up our hold on life.
